A powerful journey through love, trauma, and healing
Barbara Eckhoff’s Jeff: Trust Me is an intoxicating blend of suspense and romance that delivers heat, heart, and thrills. The stakes are as high as the emotions at play.
The novel follows Jeff Farmingham, a bodyguard and military veteran, who is struggling to recover from a traumatic experience that left him battling with both physical and mental scars. Haunted by night terrors and desperate for a change of scenery, Jeff quits his job and retreats to the serene Brisely Mountain Inn in Lexington, hoping to find solace in nature and recoup his mental state.
During a night out at the local bar, Jeff meets Raven Ahern, a top international fashion model. The attraction is instantaneous and mutual. As they get to know each other and explore their undeniable chemistry, Raven suddenly finds herself entangled in a dangerous situation and the prime target of a criminal group.
What starts as a simple connection quickly turns into a protective and investigative mission that thrusts Jeff back into the chaos he’s been trying to escape, as he goes to great lengths to ensure Raven’s safety. The stakes are high, but the question remains: Will Jeff be able to fight through his inner turmoil to save Raven, or will their love story be over before it even begins?
Eckhoff has delivered a gripping novel with both unpredictable twists and the complexities of trust and vulnerability in a relationship. Love, loyalty, trauma, protection, and healing all play parts in this story.
Jeff and Raven’s relationship is beautifully presented, filled with uncertainties and the raw emotions of a fragile and newly formed bond. Eckhoff doesn’t give them a perfect love story for the plot; instead, she weaves in the imperfections of both characters that make their connection feel genuine and powerful. The tension in the story isn’t just in the dangers they constantly face—it’s also in the emotional journey they undertake together, one that challenges them to confront their pasts and reconsider what they want for their futures.
“Until now, he had thought nothing of love at first sight and had dismissed it as an absolute exaggeration of other people’s stories. But now he had to admit to himself that, despite the short time he had known her, he was well on the way to doing just that.”
Individually, the characters are likable and well-developed. Jeff is an exceptional character who is always ready to dive headfirst into danger to protect those he cares about. He always takes charge of a situation without making Raven feel inadequate or useless.
I do wish we would have gotten more details on the case that caused much of his trauma though. While the author touches on the mental health aspects of trauma and addresses them well, I couldn’t help but still feel a little detached from Jeff as his past trauma remains somewhat underdeveloped.
“The dreams stopped coming every night, but when I stood there today with the bullets flying around my ears, it all came back. Night after night I relive the same shitty day from back then and I’m just powerless against it. So, you see, I can’t be a bodyguard anymore. I need one myself.”
Raven, on the other hand, shines as the leading lady who is much more than a damsel in distress. She is strong, resourceful, and determined to stand her ground, even when faced with overwhelming odds. The way she and Jeff complement each other, both in terms of their skills and their emotional journeys, is one of the novel’s strongest aspects.
Jeff: Trust Me is a heartwarming read with characters you can’t help but fall in love with. Whether you’re drawn to the high suspense or the tender and spicy moments, Jeff: Trust Me delivers a satisfying experience.
