When fate decides, time bends to its will.
A Timeless Attraction is a historical romance about two people from different eras brought together by the mysterious workings of fate. The novel takes readers on a journey through the past, exploring themes of love, sacrifice, and destiny against the backdrop of the American Civil War.
The story begins with Molly Hannon, a passionate graduate history major who has been fascinated by history ever since her grandfather started taking her to old battle sites and telling her stories about historical events. Her deep-seated desire to witness history firsthand becomes an unexpected reality when a mysterious force transports her back to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1863.
Here, she meets Wilbur Morris, a doctor and former owner of her grandparents’ home. Molly is captivated by Doctor Morris’s dedication to his work and kindness toward those in need. On the other hand, Doctor Morris is also bewildered and intrigued by Molly’s strange attire and speech and is drawn to her intelligence and passion for history. It doesn’t take long for a relationship to form between them as they spend more time together and bond over their past grief, trauma, and failed relationships.
Molly, burdened by the knowledge of the future, is left with a difficult choice: Risk everything to stay behind for love—despite knowing the inevitable tragic outcome—or save herself from the heartache and loss by returning home?
Author E. T. McNamara does a great job of weaving a sweet yet angst-filled romance story in such a significant part of American history. Molly and Wilbur’s relationship is tender and touching. It’s special to follow their friendship and watch their love grow.
The central conflict of Molly’s dilemma—whether to stay in the past or return to her own time—adds tension and urgency to the story. Through this, McNamara explores the struggles that come with making life-changing decisions. Readers can feel the emotional turmoil Molly goes through as she weighs her love for Wilbur against the reality of their circumstances and the potential consequences her choice will have on everyone she loves.
“That is the issue. My past is your future.”
This is a well-researched depiction of Gettysburg during the Civil War. While the novel doesn’t dwell extensively on its settings, it adeptly integrates historical facts and context. One of my favorite moments is Molly’s grandfather’s educational lecture about the American Civil War. It’s both engaging and enlightening, presenting historical information in a way that feels natural and immersive, rather than dry or purely academic. This enriches the reader’s understanding of the era without overshadowing the romance.
“It is a compelling topic. Americans today would have a hard time comparing the massive casualties on both sides during the four-year war to any recent U.S. events. Pickett’s Charge was only one of many battles throughout the three days but was the deadliest and most decisive. Although the infantry attack lasted only an hour, of the original 12,500 Confederate soldiers participating, nearly 9,000 were either killed, injured, or captured. Although fairing much better and being able to declare victory Union casualties were still estimated at 1,500 killed or wounded.”
The book doesn’t utilize much sensory description, and as a result, scenes can lose some vibrancy. We don’t always have the chance to visualize the characters’ actions and emotions, and I wish we could.
Despite this, A Timeless Attraction remains a worthwhile read. The mystery around Molly and Wilbur’s fate keeps readers engaged and curious enough to unravel the secret that binds their lives together. This book will captivate fans of time-travel romance thanks to its heartwarming love story, strong mystery, and satisfying ending.
