This thing reads like a face-grabbing, super-speed action movie.
Chris Sayther thought his problems would settle, and then he joined the epic battle against Atlantis, the legendary underwater city.
Everything has been topsy-turvy since he fell in love with Elline Dawnbringer. She is a kindred from Demos Geras, already arranged to marry someone else. During his time with Elline, Chris almost dies and gains half-kindred powers. But just as Chris gets used to his newly gained abilities, new problems bubble to the surface.
Tensions are brewing between the Kindred cities, especially with Atlantis, and Chris has to deal with his inner monster trying to overtake his human side. He continues to face his conflicting feelings of being in love with Elline while she’s betrothed to another.
Author D.A. Chan wastes no time in capturing your attention with The Tides of War. The book is a whirlwind of action, peril, character development, and unexpected twists. Chan has meticulously crafted an extraordinary world, blending fantasy with a unique touch of Filipino culture. This novel is a great excuse to explore Filipino myths associated with underwater creatures and cities.
Not only has Chan succeeded with the main protagonist (Chris) but also with its supporting cast. Elline is an easy favorite. She is dealing with issues you can’t help but feel bad for. Her heart split between Chris and her fiancé, there are times during the war she wishes to have a normal life. The growing pressure of becoming the next leader of Demos Geras has put her on the spot. It’s difficult witnessing these characters endure so many heavy decisions and obstacles, but it’s what makes the book more of an enjoyable read.
Chan has created a phenomenal fictional universe here. The war reveals to readers there is more than Demos Geras. There is Atlantis, Djain Tor, and Sol Thalen. They have their own unique politics and magical systems that you’re going to love discovering. Kindreds have all sorts of extraordinary abilities—from manipulating energy to matter. They have their own language too. A rich & full world has been developed here.
Overall, The Tides of War is eventful and fun—something that keeps you coming back for more. Whether you’re a fan of action-packed adventures, intricate magical systems, or heartwarming romances, there’s a little something for everyone in this book. It inspires a wide range of cultural and mythic interests. May D.A. Chan continue with Chris’s journey in the ever-changing Kindred world.
