A compelling portrait of what it’s like to be in a relationship with a narcissist
Doctor Fearless is a psychological romance that explores the patterns and behaviors of narcissists. It covers themes of self-discovery, love, emotional struggles, change, and the complexities of relationships.
The novel introduces us to three women—Susan, Amelia, and Priscilla—who are enchanted by the caring and charismatic Dr. Victor Sterling, a well-known neurosurgeon. As these empathic women navigate their relationships with Dr. Sterling, they are forced to confront their own vulnerabilities and insecurities and help him through his journey toward self-empowerment and healing. Each relationship exposes a greater degree of narcissism and its severity.
The novel kicks off with the love story between Susan Hayes, a registered nurse, and Dr. Victor Sterling. Victor and Susan meet at a medical conference. The attraction is instant and mutual, so it doesn’t take long for them to begin a whirlwind romance.
However, as their relationship blooms, Susan discovers that Dr. Victor Sterling isn’t all that he seems. There are rumors that suggest he is a playboy who cares little about the women he dates. This leaves Susan conflicted, as these rumors create a different person than the kind and caring man she has come to know.
Now Susan must make a choice: end the relationship before things get worse or follow her heart and give Victor a chance to change his ways and see where they end up.
Author Lili Anne Dean effectively conveys the turmoil that arises when individuals are confronted with conflicting perceptions of their partner’s character and does a great job depicting their internal struggles of making the best decision for themselves
As Susan and the other characters—Amelia and Priscilla—navigate this emotional turmoil, readers are taken on a journey of self-discovery and improvement where everyone must ultimately confront their fears and insecurities. Through these experiences, Dean reflects on the complexities of human relationships and the power of love.
The romance in the novel leaves me wanting. A good bit of the relationship is summarized; there aren’t many moments of connection through conversations, gestures, or shared experiences that allow us to feel the chemistry between them. Sometimes it can feel like we’re being told about their relationship from a distance without feeling the sparks. I also longed for a bit more variety among the longer monologues and shorter dialogue.
Dean’s exploration of narcissism in Doctor Fearless is insightful and deeply relatable. She encourages readers to always remember to put themselves first—even empaths —and to move on when someone is beyond saving or fixing. Doctor Fearless conveys a compelling message on self-worth and love. A worthwhile debut novel.
