A creative supernatural journey through self-discovery

Overmorrow’s narrator, Meredith Percy, has a history of telling far-fetched tales, but this one, she insists, is absolutely true. She describes taking refuge from a freak snowstorm in a bar called Overmorrow. As the storm rages outside, two more travelers stumble in: Elijah and Yvonne.

But this isn’t your ordinary bar; food seems to appear from nowhere, alcoholic drinks are strangely ineffective, and the barman knows far more about his customers than is usual.

“It’s a place to become you again. Or become the you that you should have been. A place to start over.”

All three are stuck in the bar for another reason far more mysterious and dangerous than the snow, and to secure their release, they must tell a story that reveals their demon.

Yvonne Martinez goes first. Her story weaves through the loss of her beloved Uncle, her chaotic relationship with her husband Victor, and her flight from the terrifying El Monsturo, a fictional monster from her Tio Miguel’s stories that has turned frighteningly real.

Elijah’s recitation takes them through his partner Orrin’s drug addiction and eventual death, Elijah’s journey to attend Orrin’s funeral, and the disturbing and demonic events that occurred at his cousin’s house that caused Elijah to flee.

Meredith, though initially resisting telling her story, details her childhood struggles after her mother died, the separation from her siblings, succumbing to peer pressure and drugs, and her endeavor to try and get clean and find her siblings. But why were these travelers led to the same bar at the same time? And what do their stories have in common that could secure their release? The answer will involve traveling to another world where nothing is as it seems.

The creative and mysterious worldbuilding of this novel are intriguing and steadily building; to solve the book’s mysteries, you’ll follow an egg from Yvonne’s story, a mirror shard from Elijah’s, and a rag from Meredith’s. The conclusion is a chaotic blast of every paranormal event and lore imaginable, nicely mirroring how the characters must feel.

As enjoyable as the three stories are, the narration tends to overpower the plot in some spots, jolting the reader out of the action and taking its time allowing the reader to tap back into the story. As unique as the narration is to the character it reflects, the interruptions to the story can sometimes subtract more than they add.

Mysteriously weaving together the stories of three strangers, Overmorrow is an innovative paranormal adventure about confronting your demons.
